January 12th, 2010, is a date that marks the earthquake, and catastrophic chain of events that continues to build daily in Haiti. People that were lucky to survive the initial quake, continue to face daily survival challenges involving the lack of basic medical care, sanitation, fresh water, food, adequate shelter and clothing. The hardest hit have been those individuals whose injuries easily treatable under normal circumstances have turned life threatening because of limited medical treatment and supplies. Sadly, many of those people pulled alive from the rubble to joyous cries of rescuers have since perished due to the lack of adequate medical care. Several thousands will have lost limbs, and thus their livelihood, to avoid life threatening infection.
Many relief agencies mobilized immediately, only to face delays as inadequate infrastructure could not support their efforts. Thankfully, some progress is being made, but continued public support will be necessary for the weeks and months to come. 211 receives calls and web visits daily from good-hearted people willing to dedicate time and resources to Haitian Earthquake relief efforts.
NOW, locally, 211 is responding to individuals arriving from Haiti who are in need of essential services.
